Bio

Born on the Caribbean island of Trinidad, Yeshua began his artistic inclinations at a very young age. He studied ballet for 7 years and tap dancing for 2 years before he moved to Canada at the age of 15. His personal exploration of the guitar began when he was 13, but it was 4 years later when he began to seriously study the instrument. He studied classical guitar with Bagher Moazen and Brian Katz, which eventually led to his acceptance at the University of Toronto. There, he obtained his Bachelor of Music Education and honed his skills in classical guitar under the tutelage of Eli Kassner.

However, looking for a musical outlet beyond that of the university, Yeshua began doing session work for the Toronto-based band, Kelly & The Kellygirls. He worked on the albums Swing Swing (2004) and We love You, but not as Much as we love Ourselves (2006), in which he also co-wrote a song. Yeshua eventually became the band’s full-time guitarist in 2007.  In 2009, Kelly & The Kellygirls released their album Modernism, in which Yeshua co-wrote many of the songs. In 2013, Yeshua co-wrote the critically acclaimed album, The Deep Ending.

In 2015, Yeshua fulfilled a lifelong dream by migrating to Japan. There, he taught English in the public schooling system whilst studying the traditional Japanese stringed instrument, the shamisen. He was accepted as a disciple by Tomoju Tsuruzawa to study Awaji ningyō jōruri shamisen music. His master herself was a disciple of the Grand Master and national treasure of Japan, Tomoji Tsuruzawa. Because of his achievements on the shamisen and promotion of international exchange, in 2016 Yeshua was one of a handful of people chosen to meet the current monarchs of Japan, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako. In addition to studying the shamisen in Japan, Yeshua formed a bossa nova band with friends called Felicidade. The culmination of that project was performing at the Takatsuki Jazz Festival in 2017.

Because of his eclectic nature, Yeshua plays a variety of genres including blues, jazz, bossa nova, classical, rock and metal. To foster this diversity, he is always trying to immerse himself in various types of music. In the past, he has also played in bands featuring Indian film music and calypso.

In addition to creating and performing, Yeshua has a passion for teaching music. Currently, Yeshua is no longer musically active and is focusing his energies elsewhere. However, the fire is still burning so stay tuned.
